Fashion Tips for Men

This tips are not originally by me, but it is here to help all nerds of the world. NERDS UNITE !

Basic Fashion Tips
Shoes and belt need to match (no black belt with brown shoes).
No white gym socks with dress slacks.
No black socks with shorts (the doctor on vacation look).
Don’t button your shirt all the way to the top.
No short sleeves with a tie.

Advanced Fashion Tips
If you’re balding on top, shave it all short and grow a goatee. Say NO to the "Crusty the Clown" look.
Three watches: Dress watch, casual watch with a leather band and a sport watch for very casual.
Boots: Be sure to have a pair of casual and dress boots. Try them with a suit sometime.
Shoes: Look for both dress and casual in light brown, dark brown and black. One with a slightly squared toe is a good choice.
Wear your collar over the top of the collar or lapel of your blazer or light coat now and then.
Donate your pleated pants and buy flat front pants instead. Pleated pants make it look like your butt is in front.

Adoro Coal Mine

This is from a shoot in Indonesia last week, first time I was at a coal mine, quite an experience with those 2-3 story high trucks around, they are really monsters.

When you look at them from a distance they don't look big as they have the same proportion as a normal truck, it is only when you see them beside a human or a normal vehicle then you realize how big those trucks are.

I have some photos of me beside the trucks, I'll need to get Lawrence to upload them. :)

If I remember correctly the mine is about 80 to 100 meters below sea level, what you see now is a depression but when they started 20 years ago, that place was a mountain.

Hereen Road House Project

The Heeren Road House Project is in Malacca, I was there a few days ago to document the progress. This phase of the project is for 12 days but I could only spend 3 days there. If i discount the experience with the bed bugs, I had a great time ! I pretty much had a free flow of chendol with gula malacca, nyoya kueh, food and of course whiskey :)

The team comprises of archeologist, excavators, videographers and volunteers.

Crazy times are here again.

Almost a month to the day I last posted. That was a pretty normal month, but looks like the crazy times are upon us again. I'll be teaching a basic photography couse at Objectifs (http://www.objectifs.com.sg/) starting the end of this month and NHB has called with a new project that might take 1 and a 1/2 month.

In the meantime I'll need to streamline my workflow further for 36frames (http://www.36frames.com) and RueyLoon (http://www.rueyloon.com) so that both sides of the business can handle the rate of jobs coming in.

In the meantime (again) as well, I need to get my exhibition up. "Thousands and Thousands" is now complete and looking for an exhibition space. I've been through 2-3 spaces but they just didn't work out. I really like to do it as Books Actually, but the space constraint makes it a tough cookie to work within it. Maybe it'll be up in the duration of the "Month of Photography"

In the meantime (again, again), I need to look for a place to stay.

And at least 5 other project to be completed at the same time.....

Well, here's looking forward to more interesting times :)

Blunder-ful

Kim and me seems to be in a season of blunders, collectively we lost money, handphone, she ended up being blamed for matters not of her fault and I ended up buying a new apple 23inch cinema display..... errr, by mistake. Here was how it happened. I was working happily one friday afternoon and I decided to shift my powermac and imac one table to the right. Everything went fine until I tried to switch on my powermac, nothing came on, not even the familier blue screen with the apple logo, no chime, NO NOTHING !!! I must have rebooted at least 1/2 a dozen times. After swapping monitors we realised that the monitor was dead, it won't work even on Sam's computer. Now I'm in a fix, what can I do ? wait a few days and get it repaired, wait a few days to get a 2nd hand monitor online, or get a new one within the next 30 mins. I opted for the later. 30 mins later and $1600 poorer I was back with my new spanking 23inch Apple LCD.

Now... at that moment, just for fun we plugged in the old monitor.

CHING !!!!!

It just came back to life, it just did, maybe it was the wiggle of the wire or the knocking around when carrying it to SimLim for diagnosis, whatever it was, it just came back to life.

Now I'm with 2x23inch apple display. :| The most impressive setup I've personally seen I must say. :)
Anyway, the old 23inch has to go, $800 and it is yours.

And here's the first work done on the new monitor, here's my next AD for the magazine.

This is one of my fav. pictures from the KL shoot, what was I doing in KL ? shooting cars loh :)

KL is the 2nd leg of the shoot, the first was in Singapore and the 3rd will be in Jakarta. Almost every one will involve shooting cars except the Jakarta leg. I'll be missing out the shoot in Kalimantan as well as they deemed it too dangerous to fly over there now with the bad weather, and they also mentioned something about taking 1 full day of travelling to reach the location... oh well.

Met up with my cousin in KL and I'm seriously considering starting another branch in KL. There are already a few of my wedding industry partners setting up branches in KL, let's see if we can do something great in KL.

KL still holds much of the charm of Malaysia, it is a messier version of Singapore with more chaos prescribed in the recipe. What KL lacks in orderliness is made up for in it's sincerity, it feels like a real place, with real people, with the Malaysian "tidak apa attitude" thrown in at times.

Jakarta is next... going to get my Teh Botol and maybe a pack of U Mild :)

Time flies

The last 3 days passed in a blur, it was a constant rush to different places, to say hi, wishing people Merry Christmas while keeping my dates with family for lunches and Dinners. When it was all over, I realised that in the mess of it all, I didn't get to spend quality time Kim, and now it is back to work while hoping for a better weekend during the New Year Weekend. That's one thing to keep in mind and something that I've learnt through shooting so many weddings, if you pack too many things into the wedding day, you'll hardly have anytime to enjoy it. It will be just a blur of fulfilling the "have-todo" list.

We just checked out Oosh at Dempsey Road, it is really nice, open air, outdoor dining/lounging concept. If only Singapore is further away from the equator... Anyway with Shangrila breathing down our necks we'll probably sign with them, the pavilion it is then.

One more wedding assignment, one more wedding dinner to attend and that's it for me for this year.

God's many blessings upon you all. Remember God's faithfullness and his love for us.

Moments Apart in a Foreign Land

It has been one and a half years since I did the series "Moments Apart in a Foreign Land". It played a big part in my development as a photographer. The chance to catch up with Mami in Japan completes the circle that started 5 years (or was it 4 years ?) ago.

Then, when I was still a youngling, I had the chance then to sit in the workshop with other international photographer during the Month of Photography. I met Sherman and Mami, the two that opened my eyes to what other international artists are doing. That inspiration and seed of though has kept me developing in a certain style till today. It is quite a play on the tightrope to be aware of where the international scene is developing while still conscious enough not to be carried away but stand on each others' shoulders to develop my own style.

It has been a while

The last wedding I shot was almost 6 months ago, between it was filled with work for Capitaland and of course my Australia trip. During the long break I had quite some time to think about where the local wedding photography scene is heading and where do I fit in. The American style of wedding photography seems to be the IN thing now. BUT as an artist I'm closer to the European school of though, so I've decided to bring this style towards my wedding photography. A simple way to describe the 2 different style would be "the decisive moment" vs "after the decisive moment". There is a quieter more contemplative quality to the images, just like Hollywood vs European Cinemas. Slowly... I'll see how this can be done for wedding photography.

The Standard Charted Singapore Marathon

Alright, let's check the list.

ahh.... back from the marathon, photographing.

After dropping my gear off at the studio, I slept for 4 hours straight, deep sleep with dreams thrown in. Waking up at 9pm I was convinced that I won't be able to sleep anymore that night, but sinfully that wasn't the case.

At least I managed to catch up on some quality sleep, repaying the sleep debt that has been building up over the months.

This year's marathon was a breeze, no sun, great cloud cover with even a slight drizzle thrown in. DIdn't even finish the water I brought with me. Last year's one was HOT HOT HOT ! My 1.5L bottle of 100plus turned into a hot drink midway through.

Oh YA, starting at 630am this year instead of the 5am of yesteryears helped too :)
